World Tourism Highlights

With the rise of fuel prices, airlines such as American Airlines have recently announced modification to its flight services including the removal of another non-stop flight to China, this time from Chicago to Shanghai Pudong, and reducing its Chicago to Narita, Tokyo flight from daily to three days per week. At the same time, the airline also announced new airlift from Charlotte, Dallas Fort Worth, Chicago, Philadelphia and Phoenix to European destinations such as Munich, Dublin, Berlin, Bologna, and Athens. Should this be viewed as an indication that a decrease in visitors from Asia and an increase of those from Europe is to be expected?

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s 2017 Tourism Highlights Report, international tourist arrivals grew by almost 7 percent to 1.3 billion, the highest growth in seven years since 2010. Of these, 76.9 million visited the USA, making it the third top international tourism destination after France and Spain, with visitors to the USA spending US$210.7 billion collectively.

Looking at international travel on a global scale, outbound tourism data shows China remains the lead global outbound travel in terms of expenditure ($257.7 billion) followed by the USA ($135 billion), Germany (US$89,1 billion), United Kingdom (US$71.4 billion), France (US$41.4 billion), Australia (US$34.2 billion), Canada (US$31.8 billion), Russian Federation (US$31.1 billion), Republic of Korea (US$30.6 billion) and Italy (US$27.7 billion). All the top 10 source markets recorded increases with particularly strong results in the Republic of Korea, Italy and Canada.

Additionally, we will be embarking on our annual China and South Korea Sales Days from October 11 – 18 where we will visit the offices of online travel agencies, tour operators and wholesalers in Seoul, Shanghai and Beijing.
